The Heritage Eby Stone Farm House Story
The Move, The Fire, The Restoration
The story of how a 150 year old stone farmhouse influenced a whole community
In 1843 Jacob Donnenworth purchased the farm land along Bleams Road in Kitchener, that would - 150 years later - become the heritage community of Eby Estates. Jacob sold the land to his son, Michael Donnenworth in 1853. Michael built a Waterloo County Georgian stone farmhouse on the property in 1856, and the farmhouse remained in the Donnenworth family for 130 years.

Nyle Eby and his sister Audrey Becker, great grandchildren of Micheal Donnenworth, decided to sell the property to Schlegel Urban Development to make way for the Eby Estates subdivision, upon the condition the house be preserved. Nyle Eby and Audrey Becker have through their personal decisions and actions contributed to the conservation of a valued cultural heritage resource for the benefit of future generations. The result is the conservation and integration of the rehabilitated Donnenworth farmhouse within the Eby Estates community.

In 2006, the house was moved with a massive effort, starting with the difficult and costly endeavour of transplanting the hefty two-storey home. Although moving only about 75 metres, the journey required a team of experts, specialized equipment and two days. It was settled in the same slight angle to Bleams Road as its original spot, and every effort was made to preserve the historic house as close as possible to its origins.

Then tragedy struck in July of 2007. A devastating fire occurred at the Heritage House, destroying the interior of the home and leaving only the stone walls intact - something the Donnewoth decendents say shows a symbol of enduring strength. The old farmhouse could still be saved.

Developers worked with Kitchener’s heritage committee and diligently restored the home down to the smallest detail.  The historic home has influenced the look of the whole neighbourhood in Eby Estates, from the colour of brick and siding to the rooflines and home facades that emphasizes the front door, not the garage.

“It’s been a very unique and interesting part of this development,” said Vaughan Bender, Vice President of Schlegel Urban Development.
